What is a multisignature wallet?

A policy requiring several approvals before an action is allowed.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A shared safe may need two of three key holders to agree. One person can suggest an action, while the policy determines who can execute it.

This example begins with count zero and a request to call increment(). No real contract is deployed.

Understand the threshold

A two-of-three configuration means two qualifying approvals are required from three configured owners. That example describes a policy, not a guarantee about every multisignature product. Owners and thresholds are contract state that must be checked.

Preparing and executing differ

A participant can prepare a proposal without immediately moving funds. The required approvals are collected and checked before execution under the wallet’s rules. Fees and timing depend on the particular design and network.

Independence matters

If all owner keys live on one compromised device, the apparent number of owners may provide less protection than expected. Extra modules, administrators or upgrade powers can also change what controls the wallet.

Plan recovery before it is needed

A policy should consider what happens if an owner becomes unavailable. Changing the configuration itself must follow the applicable rules. Read contract-wallet basics to distinguish a backup of an owner key from the shared account’s full authorization setup.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

In a basic two-of-three policy, how many owner approvals are needed?
