What is a derivation path?

A set of instructions for choosing a branch in a deterministic key tree.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A folder path tells software which nested folder to open. A derivation path similarly selects a particular route through key derivation.

An address is public receiving information. It is not the private key that authorizes actions.

The path is part of the recipe

A seed alone is not the whole account-selection story. A deterministic wallet uses derivation rules and a path to choose a child key. Compatible inputs reproduce the same result; different paths can produce different accounts.

Read the notation carefully

Paths commonly use a sequence beginning with m, followed by numbered components. A hardened marker changes the derivation method at that step. You do not need to calculate real private keys to understand that the route matters.

Not every wallet chooses identically

Wallets and account types can use different conventions. Restoring the same backup with a different account selection may initially show a different address. A missing balance in the interface is not proof that the network erased it.

Keep learning records non-secret

A path is usually account metadata, while the seed and private keys are secrets. Follow the wallet’s documentation and avoid typing real secret material into debugging sites. A safe tutorial can illustrate paths using fictional labels.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Can using a different derivation path produce a different account?
