Software wallets and hardware wallets

Different places to keep keys and perform signing, with different trade-offs.

LET’S PICTURE IT

Keeping a stamp on your desk and keeping it in a dedicated signing device change how it is protected, but you still need to inspect what you stamp.

An address is public receiving information. It is not the private key that authorizes actions.

Software signing happens on a general device

A software wallet can manage keys and sign on a phone or computer. Its protection depends on implementation, device security and user behavior. A strong local password does not make every malicious request harmless.

Hardware separates a signing environment

A hardware wallet is designed to keep key operations in a dedicated device. The connected app can prepare a request while the device authorizes it. Actual protections depend on the device, firmware and how transaction details are displayed.

The approval still matters

A malicious application may ask a real hardware wallet to sign a harmful instruction. The device protecting the key does not automatically prove that the transaction is what you intended. Read the destination, network, amount and permissions.

Backups remain important

A hardware device can be lost or damaged. Its recovery method needs appropriate care too. Do not enter a hardware wallet’s recovery phrase into a website simply because the website claims it will “sync” or repair the device.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Can a hardware wallet make every signed request safe automatically?
