Transaction types and envelopes

A type identifier selects the transaction payload format.

LET’S PICTURE IT

Different form categories can use distinct field layouts under a common filing system.

The standard transfer interface takes an address and a raw integer amount. This diagram uses address one and amount one hundred.

Recognize typed framing

EIP-2718 defines a transaction-type envelope for specified payload formats. A typed transaction is not simply a legacy transaction with one arbitrary extra field.

Select the matching decoder

The type determines which schema and validity rules apply. Fee fields, access lists and other features differ among transaction types.

Keep signing rules aligned

The signed content belongs to the specific transaction format. Applying legacy signature assumptions to every typed transaction can misinterpret recovery or chain context.

Allow the format family to evolve

New types can be introduced through protocol changes. Check the intended fork instead of assuming a short tutorial list is exhaustive forever.

Map the protocol concept

typed transaction = type identifier || type-specific payload
legacy transaction = its legacy encoding

Choose schema before interpreting fields.

A conceptual model. Exact fields, limits and processing rules must be checked against the intended network fork.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Should every transaction type be decoded with the legacy field layout?
