Blob commitments at a glance

A commitment binds data without placing every byte inside the reference.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A tamper-evident package identifier differs from the package contents.

The text hello is a particular sequence of characters. Case or text normalization can change the encoded bytes.

Separate data and commitment

A blob’s commitment is a cryptographic object associated with the data. It is not the original blob compressed into a reversible short string.

Read the proof role

The blob scheme uses specified polynomial-commitment machinery for relevant checks. A simple sorted-pair Merkle proof is not a substitute for that verification procedure.

Distinguish binding and availability

A commitment helps bind a claim to data. Availability requires additional protocol behavior ensuring the necessary data is actually accessible.

Use exact scheme parameters

Encodings, field rules and verification setup matter. Follow the blob specification and maintained implementations for real checks.

Map the protocol concept

blob data
→ specified commitment
→ versioned reference and verification rules

availability remains an additional requirement

A conceptual model. Exact fields, limits and processing rules must be checked against the intended network fork.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Does a short commitment alone supply all original blob bytes?
