Finality failures and recovery

Loss of finalization and conflicting finality are different conditions.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A committee failing to finish a vote differs from two incompatible results both being certified.

A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims.

Distinguish liveness and safety

A chain can continue producing blocks while finalization stalls. Conflicting finalized histories would represent a different and more severe failure condition.

State the consensus assumptions

Validator participation, honest behavior and network conditions affect guarantees. Finality is not an unconditional promise independent of those assumptions.

Understand recovery mechanisms conceptually

Protocol mechanisms such as inactivity-related penalties address some prolonged participation failures. Exact recovery depends on the condition and active rules.

Avoid simplistic operational advice

A real incident requires current authoritative information and coordinated client/operator analysis. A classroom diagram cannot prescribe a universal recovery action.

Map the protocol concept

liveness issue: no new finalized checkpoint
safety issue: incompatible finalized claims

Different conditions require different analysis.

A conceptual model. Exact fields, limits and processing rules must be checked against the intended network fork.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Is stalled finalization identical to two conflicting finalized histories?
