What is a sidechain?

A separate chain can connect to Ethereum while using a different consensus security model.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A neighboring town can trade with your town without sharing the same government and rule-enforcement system.

A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims.

Separate consensus is a key distinction

A sidechain generally has its own consensus and validators rather than inheriting Ethereum settlement in the same manner as a rollup. Terminology can be used loosely, so inspect the actual architecture.

Connections do not erase independence

A bridge can move representations between systems, but the existence of a bridge does not make every sidechain block verified by Ethereum’s execution rules.

The user experience can look familiar

EVM compatibility, wallet address formats and familiar token symbols can make applications appear similar. Those interface similarities do not prove matching security assumptions.

Compare mechanisms directly

Ask who validates state, where data is available, what settles on Ethereum and who controls upgrades or bridges. The answer is more useful than a marketing label alone.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

Does EVM compatibility alone make a chain inherit Ethereum’s consensus security?
