Participants need access to the data required to reconstruct or check the system.
LET’S PICTURE IT
A summary of a homework answer is less useful if nobody can obtain the workings needed to verify it.

This example hashes UTF-8 A, B, C and D. The displayed hashes are abbreviated, and the tree uses the playground’s sorted-pair convention.
This example hashes UTF-8 A, B, C and D. The displayed hashes are abbreviated, and the tree uses the playground’s sorted-pair convention. Each pair of raw child hashes is sorted, concatenated and hashed. The resulting parent fingerprints commit to their children.Hash the two parents under the same rule to obtain one root commitment. Changing a leaf changes the hashes on its path. The highlighted siblings are B and hash(C,D). Starting with A, the verifier recomputes its path and compares the final result with a trusted root.

Commitment is not retrieval
A hash can commit to bytes without supplying the bytes themselves. Knowing a correct fingerprint does not guarantee that a user can download the information necessary to inspect state.
Verification needs the right inputs
A challenge process or state reconstruction can depend on published transaction data. A system can make a validity claim while users still need a separate availability mechanism to exercise their rights.
Storage choices change assumptions
Data can be published through Ethereum or other arrangements with different trust, retention and retrieval properties. Examine the actual design instead of assuming all scaling systems provide the same guarantees.
Keep permanence distinct
Data availability for a protocol’s verification window and indefinite historical hosting are different promises. Ask how long data must be accessible and who preserves older history afterward.
QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE
Does possession of a data hash automatically supply the data bytes?
A commitment identifies data, while availability concerns access to it.
