Hashes: fingerprints for data

The same input gives the same fingerprint; a tiny edit changes it.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A fingerprint can help you recognize a document without carrying the whole document around. A hash is a fixed-length result calculated from data.

The text hello is a particular sequence of characters. Case or text normalization can change the encoded bytes.

Deterministic, not reversible

Keccak-256 maps input bytes to a 32-byte result. The same bytes always produce the same result. A cryptographic hash is designed to make finding another input with the same result infeasible. It is not encryption and has no decryption key.

Bytes matter

The text hello and the hex bytes 0x68656c6c6f represent the same UTF-8 bytes if interpreted correctly. The literal text 0x68656c6c6f is different. Our hash tool makes you choose text or hex so the input interpretation is explicit.

Ethereum uses Keccak-256

Ethereum’s widely used hash is Keccak-256, which differs from the finalized SHA3-256 algorithm. Do not swap them just because both names mention 256. Function selectors, event signatures and many storage calculations depend on the correct hash.

Why hashes appear everywhere

Hashes connect blocks, identify data and help construct Merkle trees. A hash does not prove that the original data is true or safe. It commits to bytes; the surrounding protocol gives that commitment its meaning.
