Execution produces a claim
An optimistic rollup processes its transactions and submits state-related claims to a settlement mechanism. The design does not rely on every user personally executing a proof for each transaction.
Challenges supply accountability
A fault-proof mechanism can let eligible participants dispute invalid claims under specified rules and time windows. Data access and the ability to challenge are essential assumptions.
The details determine trust
Who may propose or challenge, what can be upgraded and how disputes are resolved vary by implementation and deployment maturity. A conceptual label does not prove every component is permissionless.
Settlement timing matters
A provisional operator confirmation differs from a settled withdrawal path. Read the network’s actual rules before assuming immediate finality or one universal waiting period.
