What is deployment?

Creation execution can install runtime code at a new contract address.

LET’S PICTURE IT

Printing a rulebook and placing it at a service desk makes those rules available at that desk. Writing the draft alone did not do that.

This example begins with count zero and a request to call increment(). No real contract is deployed.

Source code is a starting point

A developer writes code and compiles it into creation artifacts. Deployment involves execution that creates a contract account context and, when successful, installs runtime code. Saving a source file does not publish it to Ethereum.

Creation code performs setup

A constructor can set initial values and configuration during creation. The resulting runtime code is what later ordinary calls execute. Constructor arguments and initialization choices can have lasting effects on permissions and state.

Creation uses resources

A deployment needs valid transaction or internal-creation execution and sufficient resources under the protocol rules. It can fail. A predicted address or a deployment script’s log is not a substitute for verifying the actual result.

A website is deployed separately

Publishing an app’s frontend and deploying its contract are different actions. The frontend can point to a wrong network or address even when it looks polished. Connect the source, creation result and interface deliberately.
