A very large spending permission can expose more than the next intended payment.
LET’S PICTURE IT
A standing collection permit for every parcel is broader than permission to collect the one parcel you currently want to send.

The standard transfer interface takes an address and a raw integer amount. This diagram uses address one and amount one hundred.
The standard transfer interface takes an address and a raw integer amount. This diagram uses address one and amount one hundred.Keccak-256 of the canonical signature supplies the first four bytes. The transfer selector is a9059cbb.An address is twenty bytes. Standard ABI encoding adds twelve zero bytes on the left to fill one thirty-two-byte word. The integer one hundred is hex 64, left-padded in word one. Selector plus two words produces sixty-eight bytes of standard calldata.

A broad number grants a broad budget
An interface may request a very large raw allowance, sometimes a maximum integer convention. The user’s intended immediate purchase may be much smaller. Read the actual spender and amount being authorized.
Implementation details matter
How an allowance is consumed or updated depends on the token and spender behavior. Some implementations treat a maximum allowance specially. Do not infer every rule merely from the phrase unlimited in a wallet interface.
Risk can persist after one use
A continuing allowance can remain after the transaction that motivated it. If the spender has vulnerable or malicious behavior, that permission may become relevant later. Closing the frontend does not remove it.
Keep the permission visible
A useful confirmation describes which token, network, spender and amount the action concerns. The ABI lesson teaches how to inspect that request. Our tool encodes example bytes only and does not modify allowances.
