No company owns the protocol in the way a company owns its private app.
LET’S PICTURE IT
An open game can have rule authors, players and equipment makers without one person owning every match.

Receive, check and share across independent nodesStep 1 / 4
A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims.
A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims. The node checks the relevant authorization and protocol rules. Popularity does not make an invalid state transition valid.Valid candidate data can propagate to peers. Connections and timing differ, so there is no perfect simultaneous worldwide view.Peers validate under the same protocol rules. This illustration is about verification and propagation, not a complete proof-of-stake consensus algorithm.

Separate the protocol from organizations
Ethereum has researchers, client teams, application builders, node operators, validators and users. The Ethereum Foundation supports the ecosystem, but it does not own every node, contract or ETH balance.
Software changes need adoption
Developers propose and implement changes. Node operators and the wider ecosystem choose which compatible software and network to follow. This coordination involves technical and social processes; it is not a routine shareholder vote.
ETH ownership is different
Owning ETH does not automatically make someone a company shareholder or give them a simple vote over protocol rules. Validators use stake in consensus duties, while protocol governance involves a broader process.
An app has its own controls
A specific contract or website can have an owner, administrator or governance system. Check those separately. Decentralization is best examined component by component.
QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE
Does owning ETH make you a shareholder in a company called Ethereum?
ETH is a network asset, not a share certificate in a company that owns Ethereum.
