Ethereum versus the internet

Ethereum uses the internet; it does not replace the whole thing.

LET’S PICTURE IT

A shared notebook can travel over the postal system without replacing every letter, magazine and delivery service.

A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims.

The internet carries the messages

Ethereum nodes communicate using internet connections. Websites and wallet interfaces also use familiar web technologies. Ethereum adds a shared state and execution system on top of that communication infrastructure.

Not everything belongs onchain

Large videos, private conversations and rapidly changing interface details usually do not need worldwide replication and consensus. Storing data onchain has costs and privacy implications. Applications often combine ordinary web services with contracts.

What changes for an app?

A contract can make a particular set of rules publicly verifiable. A user may authorize updates through a wallet. The app’s images, search, customer support or external data may still come from conventional services.

Learn the layers

Read nodes for network access and smart contracts for shared execution. Keeping these layers separate makes it easier to understand which promises a product actually provides.
