If two people try to borrow the last library book at the same time, the record needs one agreed order for their requests.

Receive, check and share across independent nodesStep 1 / 4
A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims.
A node receives a proposed transaction or block-related message. Receipt is not the same as accepting its claims. The node checks the relevant authorization and protocol rules. Popularity does not make an invalid state transition valid.Valid candidate data can propagate to peers. Connections and timing differ, so there is no perfect simultaneous worldwide view.Peers validate under the same protocol rules. This illustration is about verification and propagation, not a complete proof-of-stake consensus algorithm.

Messages arrive at different times
Computers communicate over a network. One node may hear Maya’s transaction before Leo’s, while another hears them in the opposite order. An internet connection can be slow or fail. Shared software must cope with this imperfect communication.
Order can matter
Suppose an account has five tokens and tries to send those same five tokens to two people. Each request might look possible when viewed alone. Both cannot spend the same balance. The system needs an accepted order so everyone derives the same state.
Validity and agreement differ
Validity asks “does this update follow the rules?” Consensus asks which valid history participants follow. Nodes check validity themselves. On Ethereum, proof of stake helps coordinate the history.
There is no magic instant
A newly received message is not immediately final everywhere. Blocks can arrive late, competing heads can exist briefly, and agreement develops over time. The transaction lesson separates sending, inclusion and finality so these stages stay clear.

Why can transaction ordering matter?
Only one of two conflicting spends can use the same available funds.
