Names and symbols can be reused by unrelated contracts.
LET’S PICTURE IT
Two shops can print the same product name on different packages. The label alone does not identify the producer or contents.
SEE IT FOR YOURSELF
A valid counter call, step by stepStep 1 / 4
This example begins with count zero and a request to call increment(). No real contract is deployed.
This example begins with count zero and a request to call increment(). No real contract is deployed.Execution follows the code’s input and permission rules. A website button is not the access-control mechanism. The function reads zero, calculates zero plus one, and writes one to persistent storage. The accepted state contains count one. Later reads can inspect it. Events are emitted only if the code implements them.
Animated local teaching model. No wallet, RPC or live blockchain data. Some labels and hashes are abbreviated for readability.
Metadata can be copied
A token’s name and symbol are human-facing metadata. Another contract can use the same words. A wallet icon or social-media description adds another display layer rather than a protocol-level uniqueness rule.
Use contract and network context
The address of the relevant token implementation on the intended chain is more precise. Upgradable designs can require inspecting the active logic as well as the stable address.
The same symbol can hide different risks
A wrapped or bridged representation may have a familiar label while depending on another mechanism. A malicious imitation can choose the same display name without the same backing or rules.
Read before interpreting a balance
Confirm the intended asset context, then apply its raw-unit scale. A number plus a familiar ticker is insufficient evidence about ownership rights, redemption or market value.
QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE
Are ERC-20 symbols globally unique identifiers?
Symbols can be duplicated. Network and contract identity provide the relevant context.
