Calculate the effective gas price

Apply both caps after checking that base fee is covered.

LET’S PICTURE IT

Two ceilings can constrain one rate: the extra allowance and the maximum combined allowance.

This example supplies twenty-one thousand gas used. It is a simple teaching input, not a live estimate of a contract call.

Animated local teaching model. No wallet, RPC or live blockchain data. Some labels and hashes are abbreviated for readability.

Check inclusion coverage first

If maxFeePerGas is below the block base fee, the standard transaction cannot be included at that base fee. Do not silently compute a bargain rate by ignoring this condition.

Use the smaller valid combined rate

For the simple EIP-1559 case, effective price is min(maxFeePerGas, baseFeePerGas + maxPriorityFeePerGas). The effective tip is that result minus the base fee.

Calculate the amount separately

With gas used 50,000, base 8, priority cap 2 and total cap 15 Gwei, the effective price is 10 Gwei. The execution fee is 500,000 Gwei, or 0.0005 ETH.

Test edge cases

Set a cap equal to base to see a zero effective tip. Then set a cap below base and inspect the calculator’s rejection. This is input arithmetic only, not a current network quote.

QUICK CHECK · NO PRESSURE

At 50,000 gas and effective price 10 Gwei, what is the execution fee?
