In this track: Digital value and units
Why a converter is not a price feed
Unit conversion is fixed arithmetic; a market quote is changing external data.
Converting kilograms to grams needs a measuring rule. Finding a kilogram of apples’ price needs a market quote.
1 ETH = 1000000000 Gwei = 1000000000000000000 Wei.
Unit relationships stay fixed
One ETH is always 10¹⁸ Wei under Ethereum’s unit convention. Converting between them requires no exchange, price API or blockchain query. The result is reproducible from the input alone.
A fiat quote needs additional information
To estimate an ETH amount in dollars, an application needs a market price and a definition of that price’s source, time and currency. Different venues can show different quotes. Multiplying by a stale or unrelated quote can mislead users.
Labels should describe the calculation
An output reading 0.5 ETH is a unit amount, not a promise of purchasing power. A dollar value would also need a timestamp and assumptions. This site’s local tools intentionally avoid presenting live market or RPC data.
Use the appropriate tool
Use the Wei converter to check exact units and the manual gas calculator for supplied fee inputs. Neither tells you whether to buy an asset or what a future transaction will cost in a changing market.
Does Wei-to-ETH conversion need a live market price?
It uses the fixed relationship between units of the same native asset.
